The Assam government has decided to give a gift to the women of the state ahead of Durga Puja. Women residing in the state are set to benefit from the government's 'Orunodoi' scheme. Under this scheme, women receive monthly financial assistance. It has now been decided to provide an assistance amount of ₹1,500 to eligible female beneficiaries for the month of October. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself shared this information on social media.

Under the government-run Orunodoi scheme, eligible women usually receive ₹1,250 in financial aid each month. However, for the month of October, the government will provide an additional ₹250. This decision is set to benefit 40 lakh women across the state. The government has described this additional ₹250 as a Durga Puja gift.

What is the Orunodoi scheme?
The Orunodoi scheme is one of the key social welfare initiatives run by the Assam government. The government launched this scheme on October 2, 2020. Its primary objective is to provide financial security to women from economically weaker and poor families in Assam. Funds are transferred directly to bank accounts in their names, enabling them to easily meet their basic needs (such as medicines, pulses, sugar, fruits, vegetables, and LPG cylinders).

Which women are eligible for the scheme?
Only one woman per family can avail the benefits of the Orunodoi scheme. Eligible categories include widows, divorced women, women living apart from their families, differently-abled women, and unmarried women over the age of 45. Regarding income criteria, women belonging to families with a total annual income of less than ₹2,00,000 are eligible.

What documents are required to avail the scheme's benefits?
Eligible women can apply for the Orunodoi scheme. For this, documents such as an Aadhaar card, ration card, income certificate, proof of residence, bank account details, passport-sized photograph, and mobile number are required; additionally, if the applicant falls under the widow, differently-abled, or divorced category, the relevant certificate must be submitted.
