YouTube, taking action under its strict content policies, removed about 9.5 million videos from its platform between October and December 2024. India was the biggest contributor to these removed videos, from where about 3 million videos were deleted.

YouTube's strict policies and content moderation

YouTube, known for its strict content policy, has banned videos that spread hate speech, harassment, violence, and misinformation. To ensure the safety of viewers, YouTube uses AI-powered detection systems and human moderators, removing harmful content before it reaches a large number of viewers.

Most videos were removed due to violations of children's safety.
The largest number of videos removed by YouTube were violations related to children's safety. According to the data, more than 5 million videos were such that were considered harmful to children. Apart from this, other major reasons for removing videos include harmful or dangerous content, harassment, violent content, spam, misleading information, removal of fake channels and comments.

4.8 million YouTube channels were also removed
YouTube deleted not only videos but also 4.8 million (48 lakh) channels. Most of these channels were created to spread spam and fraud. When a channel is removed, all its videos also disappear from the platform. More than 54 million (5.4 crore) videos were removed from YouTube under this massive action.

1.2 billion (120 crores) comments were also deleted
YouTube removed 1.2 billion (120 crores) comments from its platform, most of which were spam. Some comments were deleted due to harassment, hate speech, or threats.

YouTube's effort: Making the platform safer
YouTube is constantly improving its content moderation system so that inappropriate and misleading content does not spread on the platform. With India having the highest number of videos being removed, the question arises whether content creators are following YouTube's guidelines properly or not.
