Elon Musk has announced that XChat, the new direct messaging feature of X (formerly Twitter), will feature Bitcoin-style encryption. The feature is currently available in beta version for paid subscribers of X. It will include not only encryption but also features like vanishing messages, audio and video calling, and file sharing, although no official date has been given as to when XChat will be released for general users.

XChat is based on the Rust programming language.

Musk said in a post on X that XChat is built on a programming language called Rust. This language is known for security and speed. It was originally developed by Mozilla Research and today it is being used on platforms like Dropbox, Cloudflare, and Discord.

Bitcoin-style encryption: What is special?

Elon Musk said that XChat will feature "bitcoin-style encryption", however, this name may be a bit misleading as Bitcoin does not have any encryption directly, but XChat will likely use cryptographic techniques that are used in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Until XChat is launched publicly, its security techniques cannot be accurately known.

The vanishing message, calling, and file-sharing facility

XChat will also have the facility of vanishing messages, as is already available in WhatsApp and Instagram, where messages automatically disappear after a certain time. Apart from this, this feature will also support audio and video calling, although Musk has not yet clarified on which platforms this support will be available.

XChat will be only for paid users.

Only X Premium subscribers will be able to use XChat. X's paid subscription service has three levels - Basic, Premium, and Premium+, but it is not clear which of these tiers will get the XChat facility.

The Old encrypted DM feature has been discontinued.
Last week, the official handle of X Engineering informed that the encrypted direct messaging feature available on the platform has been discontinued indefinitely for "some improvements". It is believed that this move has been taken to promote the new XChat feature. Currently, this feature is available only for beta testers and the company has not yet rolled it out widely.
