According to a report, in the year 2024, not only women have been ahead of men in terms of taking loans, but women are more disciplined than men in terms of repaying loan.
In recent years, the number of women borrowers in India has increased tremendously in the last few years in terms of taking loans. In this, an increase of 45 percent has been seen on an annual basis since 2022. Fintech platform Empocket reported that women borrowers of 2024 alone have taken loans worth Rs 4.8 lakh crore from financial institutions. Banks and financial institutions also trust women more than men in terms of repayment discipline in terms of lending. The CRIF High Mark report also showed that women have outpaced men in loan growth and repayment discipline in 2024.
Healthcare has been the top priority for women. 33.5 percent of the loans taken by women borrowers have been used for medical emergencies. A large number of women have also taken loans for education. 20.6 percent of the loans taken by women borrowers have been used for skill development and learning. While 17.4 percent of loans have been taken for business purposes. The spirit of entrepreneurship is particularly strong in eastern India, where 25 percent of women borrowers are using loans for their business.
According to a recent report by Niti Aayog, at least 27 million women in India are taking loans to run their businesses and are actively monitoring their credit scores, reflecting a strong increase in financial awareness. By December 2024, the number of women monitoring their credit had increased by 42 percent compared to the previous year. Another report said the number of active female borrowers grew by 10.8 percent in 2024 to reach 83 million by December. This growth rate was much higher than the 6.5 percent increase recorded for men.
