The Bihar government has rolled out the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana, a flagship initiative aimed at empowering women with financial support and self-employment opportunities. Under the scheme, one woman from each eligible household will receive an initial grant of ₹10,000, directly credited into their bank accounts, to help them start a small business or livelihood activity.

On September 26, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar officially launched the program by transferring the first installment to the bank accounts of 7.5 million women. In total, the scheme is expected to benefit more than 14 million women across Bihar.

A unique feature of the scheme is that the financial assistance will be disbursed only on Fridays, with transfers beginning from October 3, 2025 and continuing until December 26, 2025.

Purpose and Benefits

The primary objective of the scheme is to provide women with the means to achieve economic independence and entrepreneurship. Every eligible woman will initially receive ₹10,000 to set up her chosen business. After six months, based on the progress of her work, she may become eligible for additional financial aid of up to ₹2 lakh.

Beyond financial support, the scheme also includes entrepreneurship and business management training, enabling women to sustain and grow their enterprises. The implementation is being handled through Jeevika self-help groups and village-level organizations.

Eligibility Criteria

The scheme is open only to permanent female residents of Bihar aged between 18 and 60 years. However, there are some restrictions:

  • Only one woman per household can avail the benefit.

  • Families with a government employee, pension recipient, or income-tax payer are excluded.

  • Beneficiaries are also required to undergo mandatory training sessions before receiving the grant.

Application Process

For women already linked with Jeevika self-help groups, there is no need for a separate application. New applicants, however, can apply either at the nearest village-level organization or through the official online portal https://mmry.brlps.in/.

Applicants will need to provide:

  • Aadhaar card

  • Bank passbook

  • Mobile number

  • Other essential documents

The application process has been designed to be simple, transparent, and accessible, ensuring maximum participation from women across both rural and urban Bihar.

Payment Schedule and Future Plans

To ensure transparency and timeliness, the Bihar government has decided to transfer payments every Friday. Starting from October 3, the first installment of ₹10,000 will be deposited into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

In the long term, women whose businesses show growth will not only receive additional funding but will also gain access to advanced training programs and support under related government schemes, ensuring sustainable livelihood opportunities.

A Step Towards Women’s Empowerment

The Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana is a significant move toward boosting women’s economic participation in Bihar. By offering both financial support and skill development, the scheme aims to strengthen women’s confidence, enhance self-reliance, and improve the socio-economic status of households across the state.

With more than 14 million women set to benefit, this program is being hailed as a landmark initiative in women-centric governance, promising long-term transformation in Bihar’s rural and urban communities.
