According to the central bank, almost all ₹2,000 notes have now returned to the banking system since the announcement of their withdrawal from circulation. This figure not only shows the progress of the note withdrawal process but also clarifies that people have largely followed the RBI's instructions.

According to the RBI, when the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes was announced on May 19, 2023, their total value was ₹3.56 lakh crore. By December 31, 2025, this amount had reduced to just ₹5,669 crore. This means that approximately 98.41% of the notes have returned to the banking system.
₹2,000 Note Still Valid
The RBI has reiterated that the ₹2,000 note is still legal tender. This means that holding or using it in transactions is still legally valid, although it is being gradually withdrawn from circulation.
Options for Deposit and Exchange
According to the central bank, until October 7, 2023, all bank branches across the country provided facilities for depositing and exchanging ₹2,000 notes. Since October 9, 2023, the RBI's 19 Issue Offices have been providing facilities for depositing these notes directly into bank accounts. In addition, ordinary citizens can also send ₹2,000 notes to the RBI through the post office.
Existing System for Depositing/Exchanging ₹2,000 Notes
Currently, the RBI has kept the following options open for depositing or exchanging ₹2,000 notes:
Deposit through RBI Issue Offices: People can deposit ₹2,000 notes into their bank accounts by visiting any RBI Issue Office located across the country. Identity verification and normal banking rules apply to this process.
Facility through India Post: Those who are unable to visit a bank branch within the stipulated time can send their ₹2,000 notes to the RBI Issue Office through their nearest post office. After necessary verification, the amount is directly credited to the sender's bank account.
