Will you get a subsidy on a 5kg cylinder without a Ujjwala connection? Here’s what the rules say.
Will you get a subsidy on a 5kg cylinder without a Ujjwala connection? Here’s what the rules say.
If you hold a standard LPG connection (not under the Ujjwala scheme) and believe you are entitled to a subsidy on the 5kg cylinder, that is not the case. The subsidy benefit is available only to eligible beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme.
Prices for LPG cylinders—ranging from commercial and standard domestic ones to the smaller 5kg 'Chhotu' cylinders—have been hiked multiple times across the country this year. Consequently, many people want to know whether the subsidy applies only to the standard 14.2kg domestic cylinder or extends to the 5kg 'Chhotu' cylinder as well.
The answer depends on the type of connection you hold—specifically, whether you have a standard connection or are a beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana—as the rules differ for each.
Know the Ujjwala scheme rules
It is important to note that the LPG cylinder subsidy is provided to eligible beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme. This facility is not available to consumers with standard gas connections; it is reserved for Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries. Therefore, simply purchasing an LPG cylinder does not guarantee that every customer will receive a subsidy on it.
Will there be a subsidy on the 5kg cylinder?
Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries receive a subsidy on the standard 14.2kg domestic LPG cylinder as well as the 5kg cylinder. However, the subsidy amount for the 5kg cylinder is determined based on its weight. Crucially, having an Ujjwala connection is mandatory to avail of this benefit.
What happens if you have a standard connection?
If you have a standard 5kg cylinder—meaning you do not have an Ujjwala scheme connection—you will not receive a subsidy on the 5kg cylinder. In this case, you will have to purchase the cylinder at the market price. In other words, it is clear that simply purchasing a 5 kg cylinder is not enough to avail the subsidy benefit; you must also be an eligible beneficiary of the Ujjwala Yojana.
