Will you be denied a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder if you cannot provide a fingerprint? The court issues notice to the government.

The new biometric rule for LPG has now reached the doors of the court. Taking a firm stance on the mandatory requirement for Aadhaar scanning, the Delhi High Court has sought a response from the government. The next hearing is scheduled for November 18.

Effective October 1, 2026, Aadhaar-based biometric verification was made mandatory for the booking of domestic LPG cylinders and for availing subsidies. This decision was taken to prevent the misuse of subsidies, eliminate fraudulent connections, and curb the black marketing of gas cylinders. The matter has now reached the court.

Pulkit Luthra, a lawyer who is 75% visually impaired, has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. Since the government’s new Aadhaar verification rule requires iris and fingerprint scans, he argues that this policy poses a significant challenge for the visually impaired, as well as for the elderly or those suffering from serious illnesses.

While the government’s objective is to prevent the misuse of subsidies, concerns have been raised regarding whether all LPG consumers will be able to complete this authentication process without difficulty. In light of this, the court has directed the Central Government, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), and state-run oil companies (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL) to submit their responses within two weeks. The next hearing in the case will take place on November 18.
