Will the minimum pension rise from ₹1,000 to ₹7,500? Find out who stands to benefit and by how much from the pensioners' demands..
EPS-95 Minimum Pension Hike 2026: Significant news has emerged for the approximately 8.1 million (81 lakh) pensioners associated with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's (EPFO) EPS-95 pension scheme. Pensioners, who have been awaiting an increase in the minimum pension for over a decade, are once again preparing to launch a major agitation to press for their demands.
Currently, the minimum pension provided under EPS-95 is merely ₹1,000 per month—a rate that has been in effect since September 2014. Deeming this amount inadequate amidst rising inflation, the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee has called for a nationwide protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on August 5.
**Key Demands of the Pensioners**
Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Commander Ashok Raut, National President of the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee, stated that pensioners have long been conveying their concerns to the government through peaceful memorandums and appeals. However, these have gone unheeded so far. Consequently, the committee has once again placed its demands before the government. The specific demands put forward are as follows:
* The minimum monthly pension should be raised from ₹1,000 to ₹7,500.
* Dearness Allowance (DA) linked to the inflation index should be added to the increased pension.
* Free and high-quality medical treatment facilities should be provided to pensioners and their spouses.
* In accordance with Supreme Court rulings, the actual benefits of a higher pension should be extended to all eligible retired employees as soon as possible.
**Who stands to benefit and by how much if the demands are accepted?**
If the Central Government and the Ministry of Labour agree to these demands from the EPS-95 National Agitation Committee, it will directly impact the financial status of over 8.1 million EPS pensioners across the country. Currently, the majority of EPS-95 pensioners receive an average monthly pension of only ₹1,171. If their demand is met, every eligible pensioner will receive a fixed monthly amount of at least ₹7,500. Retired employees—who contributed to the nation's industrial and economic growth for decades—would no longer need to depend on others in their old age and would gain financial security. Access to medical treatment through free health insurance alongside the pension would ensure that elderly couples do not have to rely on their savings or their children.
'We need concrete steps, not just assurances'
Commenting on the matter, Commander Ashok Raut states that the demand for a minimum pension of ₹7,500 is not for an extra or unreasonable benefit; rather, it is a fundamental necessity linked to a dignified life, basic needs, and social security. Meanwhile, committee office-bearers point out that while the government has repeatedly offered assurances, no concrete policy decision has been taken so far. The committee has warned that if the government continues to ignore their demands, they may be compelled to take extreme measures, such as self-immolation.
