Will old chequebooks become invalid after December 31? Here is what the RBI says
Claims are circulating on social media suggesting that chequebook rules are set to change starting January 1, 2027. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has now clarified the truth behind these viral claims. Let’s take a look.
Social media is frequently filled with various photos, videos, and viral claims. In this context, a claim concerning the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently gone viral, alleging that old bank chequebooks will become invalid from January 1, 2027, and that new ones will be issued. The message further claims that old cheques for amounts exceeding ₹50,000 will no longer be accepted.
The RBI has now debunked these claims and revealed the facts. The central bank has stated that the viral claim is entirely false; no such rule has been implemented by the RBI.
What is the viral claim?
A post circulating on social media advises users to replace their old chequebooks by December 31, 2026, asserting that using new chequebooks will become mandatory from January 1, 2027. The post mentions several changes for the new chequebooks, including the addition of an alpha-numeric code, a new MICR number, a UV code, and other security features mandated by the RBI.
It has come to the notice of the Reserve Bank of India that a message is circulating on social media claiming that the standard Cheque Truncation System (CTS) cheque books currently in use will change from December 31, 2026 and the new cheque books featuring updated security standards will come into effect from January 1, 2027. It is clarified that at present Reserve Bank of India is not introducing any such measures with regard to the CTS cheque books. As such, the message is factually incorrect and misleading. Members of public are requested to rely only on the information published by RBI from time to time in such matters.

The RBI reveals the truth
The RBI has categorically rejected this viral claim. Through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the RBI shared the post, clearly labeling it as "FAKE." In a post, the RBI stated, "The Reserve Bank of India has noted a message circulating on social media, which claims that the currently used standard Cheque Truncation System (CTS) chequebooks will be replaced from December 31, 2026, and that new chequebooks with enhanced security features will be introduced starting January 1, 2027."
The post further clarifies, "It is stated that the Reserve Bank of India is not taking any such action regarding CTS chequebooks at this time. Therefore, this message is factually incorrect and misleading. The general public is advised to rely only on information issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from time to time regarding such matters."
Additionally, the RBI has urged the public to understand that a claim or piece of information does not become true simply because it goes viral on social media. People should only trust such claims after receiving official confirmation. Whenever possible, rely solely on official information in such matters.
