Will Jio users not have to pay more for every GB? Akash Ambani reveals a new plan to boost revenue..
Ahead of Reliance Jio’s IPO, Chairman Akash Ambani has clarified that the company will not rely solely on raising mobile recharge prices or charging more per gigabyte (GB) of data to boost its revenue. Instead, the company’s focus is on expanding its business by offering a wider range of digital services to customers, scaling up home broadband, and developing artificial intelligence (AI)-driven offerings.
In an interview with Moneycontrol, Akash Ambani stated that while tariffs are a component of the company’s business model, they are not the only lever for increasing revenue. Jio aims to leverage its vast network—comprising over 500 million (50 crore) subscribers—to deliver an enhanced digital experience.
Beyond recharges: How Jio plans to drive revenue growth
Jio’s strategy involves encouraging higher data consumption among users while simultaneously providing them with additional digital services. Key areas of focus include:
Home broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): Expanding access to high-speed internet for households.
OTT and digital subscriptions: Offering services such as video streaming, music, and cloud storage alongside internet connectivity.
AI-based services: Developing artificial intelligence-driven solutions for both consumers and businesses.
Enterprise services: Providing cloud, connectivity, and digital solutions to corporate clients.
The company believes that as customers utilize more services on a single platform, new opportunities will emerge to increase revenue per user.
Will recharge prices go up?
Questions have also been raised regarding Jio’s next tariff hike. However, Akash Ambani did not provide any specific details regarding the timing of the next increase or the extent to which tariffs might be adjusted.
He noted that pricing decisions would be guided by factors such as customer needs, competition, inflation, investment requirements, and prevailing market conditions. Maintaining high network quality while ensuring that services remain affordable also remains a priority for the company. In other words, Jio has not ruled out the possibility of a tariff hike, though it has not provided a specific timeline for it.
