ITR Filing New Deadline: The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) has been changed. That is, those who have not yet filed their income tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26 can now do so without any penalty. Now the deadline for filing tax returns has been extended by one more day to Tuesday, September 16. Earlier, the last date for filing ITR without any penalty was Monday, September 15. With this, now taxpayers with non-audit accounts can file their returns till 12 o'clock tonight.

Why was the deadline extended?

The date of ITR filing was extended because many people complained of technical glitches on the e-filing portal. Due to this, people faced difficulties in filing returns. Many people including chartered accountants complained about this on social media.

CBDT issued a circular saying, "The due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR), which was originally on July 31, 2025, has been extended to September 15, 2025." CBDT has now decided to extend the date for filing these ITRs from September 15, 2025 to September 16, 2025. It was also informed in the circular that the e-filing portal will be in maintenance mode from 12 pm to 2:30 pm on September 16, so the portal will be closed for some time. During this time some changes will be made in it.

More than 7.28 crore people filed returns

Income Tax Returns informed that till Monday, September 15, more than 7.3 crore tax returns were filed, while 7.28 crore ITRs were filed last year. In 2023-2024, this figure was 6.77 crore returns filed. This shows that ITR filing is increasing every year.
