Wireless internet and mobile networks operate via radio waves; however, these waves are unable to penetrate such thick and dense walls. This is the reason why the signal becomes weak or cuts out completely.

Elevators are constructed almost entirely out of metal, effectively functioning as a "Faraday cage." This means they prevent external signals from entering the interior. The moment you step into an elevator, your phone begins to lose its connection to the network, leading to issues such as dropped calls and a complete loss of internet connectivity.

Mobile networks rely on signals transmitted from network towers. Since basements are located underground, both the physical distance from the tower and the number of intervening obstacles increase significantly. The signal is forced to pass through multiple layers of material, resulting in a substantial reduction in its strength.
