Basements and elevators are typically constructed using thick concrete walls. These walls also contain iron (metal) reinforcements, which act as barriers to radio signals. Wireless internet and mobile networks operate via radio waves; however, these waves are unable to penetrate such thick and dense walls. This is the reason why the signal becomes weak or cuts out completely.

Elevators are constructed almost entirely out of metal, effectively functioning as a "Faraday cage." This means they prevent external signals from entering the interior. The moment you step into an elevator, your phone begins to lose its connection to the network, leading to issues such as dropped calls and a complete loss of internet connectivity.

Mobile networks rely on signals transmitted from network towers. Since basements are located underground, both the physical distance from the tower and the number of intervening obstacles increase significantly. The signal is forced to pass through multiple layers of material, resulting in a substantial reduction in its strength.

Different networks operate on different frequencies. High-frequency signals offer faster data speeds, but they are less capable of penetrating walls effectively. Consequently, 4G and 5G networks tend to be significantly weaker in basements or elevators, whereas older 2G signals can sometimes still function in those environments.

While completely eliminating this issue is not an easy task, there are certain methods that can help mitigate the problem. Network boosters or signal repeaters are installed in large malls, offices, or apartment complexes to ensure connectivity even in the basement. Additionally, the Wi-Fi calling feature can also come in handy if Wi-Fi is available there.
