MCB: Technology has advanced to the point where potential hazards can be prevented before they occur. Consequently, MCBs are invariably installed during the wiring process when building a new home. However, many people still do not know why they are necessary or what function they perform. Let us understand why installing an MCB in the home is considered a safety measure.

What is an MCB?

An MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is a device used in homes to ensure the safety of electrical circuits. This small device automatically cuts off the power supply if a fault occurs in the electrical system. It helps protect wiring, electronic devices, and—in many cases—the home itself from serious damage. This device is installed in the home's electrical distribution board. Its function is to automatically stop the flow of current whenever an abnormal condition arises in the electrical circuit.

How does it avert danger during an overload?

When too many electrical devices operate on a single circuit, the current flowing through that circuit increases; this is known as an overload. For instance, if an air conditioner, heater, microwave, and other high-power appliances run on the same line, it places excessive load on the wiring.

In such a situation, the MCB detects the high current flow and "trips" after a short while. Once tripped, the power supply to the entire house is cut off. This prevents extra load on the wires and minimizes the risk of overheating.

Why was it needed?

It is worth noting that fuses were used in place of this device in the past. However, fuses had a drawback: whenever there was a surge in current, the wire inside would heat up, melt, and break the circuit. On the other hand, once an MCB trips, it can be switched back on to restore power.

Useful in Short-Circuit Situations

It is worth noting that the primary function of an MCB is to protect the home from short circuits. When a fault causes the phase and neutral wires to come into direct contact, a sudden surge of high current flows through the system.

This situation is extremely dangerous. In such a scenario, the MCB comes into play; it detects the high current, trips rapidly, and disconnects the circuit. This significantly reduces the risk of damage to the wiring and electrical appliances.
