Who will get a free scooter in UP and how? Find out where and how to apply..
In Uttar Pradesh, free scooters are provided under the 'Rani Laxmibai Scooty Scheme'. The Yogi government has approved the proposal for this scheme for the 2025-26 academic year. Under this initiative, the government will provide scooters to the top 5% of female students in every college. The primary objective of the scheme is to encourage meritorious female students in the state to pursue higher education and to facilitate their commute.
**Eligibility Criteria for the Scheme**
Only female students who are bona fide residents of the state are eligible for the Rani Laxmibai Scooty Scheme. Regarding academic qualifications, meritorious female students pursuing undergraduate studies in government or private colleges are eligible. The top 5% of meritorious female students from the graduating batch of each institution are selected for this benefit.
Family income is also a factor for eligibility; a student is considered eligible only if her family's total annual income is less than ₹12 lakh. However, priority is given to differently-abled students, destitute students, and those belonging to the families of martyrs.
**What is Included with the Scooty?**
Along with the free scooter, the government provides 5 liters of petrol initially. Additionally, the scheme covers the cost of a helmet, RTO registration, and vehicle insurance.
**Required Documents**
To avail the benefits of this scheme, certain documents are required. These include an Aadhaar card, residence certificate, income certificate, 10th/12th and undergraduate mark sheets/certificates, college ID card, bank passbook, passport-sized photograph, and a mobile number.
**How to Apply for the Scooty Scheme**
To avail the benefits, students must visit the official online portal of the Higher Education Department or the UP Scholarship portal (scholarship.up.gov.in). On the portal, click on the 'Rani Laxmibai Scooty Yojana' tab. Then, complete the new registration process by entering your mobile number, Aadhaar details, and roll number. After this, upload your mark sheet, as well as your income and residence certificates.
Following the application, the college or university will verify your merit and marks and forward the list to the department. Once the final merit list is released, the keys to the scooters and the relevant documents are handed over to the selected female students at a ceremony.
