Who gets your PF money after you? EPFO outlines e-nomination rules
If you are employed and hold a PF account, this information regarding e-nomination is relevant to you. It is essential to update your nominee details after marriage or the birth of a child to avoid complications when claiming PF, pension, and insurance benefits.
If you are employed and have an EPF account, keeping your e-nomination details updated is crucial. This is because the nomination plays a vital role in processing claims related to the PF corpus, pension, and insurance in the event of an employee's death. According to EPFO rules, these details must be updated whenever there is a change in family status.
Often, employees provide nominee details when starting a job but fail to update them after marriage or having children. This can lead to difficulties with PF-related claims later on. Therefore, it is important to understand who can be appointed as a nominee and how to complete the e-nomination process.
Who can be appointed as a PF nominee?
If you have a family, eligible family members are typically appointed as nominees. If you are married, you must register details of your spouse and children as family members. However, if you do not have a family, you can appoint another individual as your nominee. A prior nomination becomes invalid upon marriage or the formation of a family, making it necessary to file a new nomination. For this reason, unmarried members must update their nominee details after marriage.
The role of the nominee in EPS and EDLI
PF nomination is not limited solely to the accumulated balance in the EPF account. Under the EPFO umbrella, the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme are also covered alongside the EPF.
For EPS, the employee is required to provide details regarding their spouse and children. Furthermore, the nomination made for the EPF also applies to the EDLI scheme. Therefore, maintaining accurate and up-to-date family details is essential.
How to complete e-nomination with EPFO?
First, log in to the EPFO member portal using your UAN and password.
Next, go to the 'Manage' option and click on 'E-Nomination'.
Verify the personal details displayed on the screen.
Update family details and add eligible members.
Enter details such as the nominee's name, date of birth, relationship, Aadhaar number, and address.
If the nominee is a minor, provide the guardian's details as well.
Then, select the nominee and specify their share of the PF amount.
If there is more than one nominee, the total share must equal 100%.
After saving the family details, complete the Aadhaar-based e-sign process.
Enter the OTP received on the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
Finally, check the 'Nomination History' to verify whether the nomination process has been completed.
Merely entering details does not complete the e-nomination
Simply entering the nominee's details is not enough for e-nomination; completing the Aadhaar-based e-sign process is also mandatory. If you do not complete the e-sign, the nomination may be considered incomplete.
