The University Grants Commission (UGC) releases a list of fake universities every year to help students avoid admission to such institutes. The Commission has also clarified that such institutes have no authority to grant degrees, and that a degree recognized by them will not be valid for higher education or employment. According to the UGC Act 1956, only those institutes established under central, state, or provincial law or those designated as deemed universities under Section 3 of the Act can confer degrees. Furthermore, only institutes empowered by a special Act of Parliament can legally confer degrees.
