To witness these changes firsthand and gather information on ongoing development works in the Northeast, a delegation of journalists and officials from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh has arrived in Assam at the initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government. Undertaken as part of the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Great India) initiative, this visit aims to gain a close understanding of connectivity in the Northeast, railway modernization, and the impact of Central Government schemes.
**Railways to receive alerts before adverse weather**

During the monsoon season, heavy rains and inclement weather in the Northeast pose major challenges for train operations. To address this, the railways are utilizing Automatic Weather Stations. These stations provide continuous weather-related data, enabling the railways to receive timely information about adverse weather or rapidly changing conditions. This data helps in ensuring safer train operations and taking necessary measures in a timely manner when required.

**AI to issue alerts if elephants stray onto tracks**

In the Northeast, railway tracks pass through areas frequented by elephants and other wildlife. Preventing collisions between trains and wildlife in such zones is a major challenge for the railways. To tackle this, the railways are employing AI-based systems—such as ‘Gajraj’—and sensor technology. These systems detect the presence of elephants near the tracks and alert railway authorities in time, aiming to control train speeds and avert potential accidents.

**Rail connectivity from the Northeast to neighboring countries**

The focus of the Northeast railways is not limited to domestic connectivity alone. Plans are also underway to establish international rail connectivity with neighboring countries under the North East Frontier Railway. Potential rail links—such as those connecting India with Bangladesh and Myanmar—could open up new avenues for international trade and connectivity for the Northeast. This transformation of the railway sector in the region demonstrates that equal importance is being accorded to safety and technology alongside connectivity. As the railway network expands, the use of technologies like AI, sensors, and modern weather monitoring systems is increasing to ensure safe and efficient operations.
