When can you still be fined even while wearing a helmet? Find out what the rules are..
Traffic police issue fines if you do not wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle or scooter. Through CCTV cameras installed at intersections, images of riders without helmets are captured, and an e-challan is sent directly to their homes. But did you know that you can still be fined even if you are wearing a helmet? Under the Motor Vehicles Act, there are certain situations where you could face a heavy fine despite wearing one.
Wearing a helmet without an ISI or BIS mark
If you purchase a low-quality or 'local' helmet—often found on the roadside—simply to avoid a fine, be careful. According to the rules, helmets worn by both the rider and the pillion passenger must be certified by the ISI (Indian Standards Institute) or BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). If your helmet does not meet these safety standards, the traffic police can legally classify it as 'not wearing a helmet' and issue a fine.
Leaving the helmet strap unfastened
Many people place a helmet on their head but fail to fasten—or choose to leave unfastened—the locking strap. In the event of an accident, such a helmet can easily slip off, offering no protection at all. Under traffic regulations, failing to properly fasten or lock your helmet strap is considered a violation of safety standards. The police can issue a fine for this negligence as well.
Road safety experts emphasize that a helmet should be worn not merely to avoid fines, but to protect your life. Therefore, whenever you head out, always wear a high-quality, BIS-certified helmet, and ensure that the strap is securely fastened.
