Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has introduced a new 'Safety Overview' tool to protect users from online fraud and scams. Through this feature, when an unknown person adds a user to a WhatsApp group, they will be sent an alert.

This tool will show important information related to the group and security-related tips. If the user wants, he can exit from the group chat without seeing it. If the group looks familiar, then the entire chat can also be opened and checked.

Those outside the contact list will also be monitored.

WhatsApp said that notifications coming from such new groups will remain silent until the user decides whether they want to remain in it or not.

The company is now also testing a feature through which, if a user starts a chat with an unknown person, they will be given additional information related to the identity of that person. This will make the user more capable of making decisions.

Strict action against scam centers
WhatsApp informed that it is also keeping an eye on scam centers active in Southeast Asia, where criminal gangs operate them through forced labor. The company said that in the first half of the year 2025 itself, it has banned more than 68 lakh accounts that were linked to scam activities.

A large fraud network based in Cambodia was recently dismantled by the joint efforts of WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI. This scam network was engaged in defrauding people in the name of fake schemes like a rent-a-scooter pyramid scheme and a crypto investment.

The scam is linked to the crypto account.

According to OpenAI, scammers created fake messages using ChatGPT and, after adding people on WhatsApp, took them to Telegram and lured them into liking TikTok videos. After this, they were asked to deposit money in the crypto account by showing false earnings figures. WhatsApp clarified that it will continue to take strict action against such accounts and networks in the future to protect its users.
