WhatsApp to Help Identify Scam Messages; Activate the New Setting
The constant influx of fake and scam messages on WhatsApp has become a major source of concern for everyone. Now, the company has introduced an impressive new feature designed to alert users about these scammers in advance. Here is how you can activate this new setting.
It is crucial to exercise caution if you receive a message from an unknown number on WhatsApp, especially if the sender urges you to send money, open a link, or share personal information in a hurry. Scammers often try to gain your trust by posing as bank employees, friends, or company representatives. Such messages can appear completely normal, making it difficult to spot them as suspicious at first glance.
To address this issue, WhatsApp is working on a feature called "Scam Alert." Its purpose is to warn users in a timely manner when a suspicious message is detected. This feature appears as a separate setting within the app and must be enabled manually. However, it has not yet been rolled out to everyone's WhatsApp. Here is how it works, where to find the setting, and what you should do if an alert appears.
Scam Alert Will Warn About Suspicious Messages
The Scam Alert feature specifically monitors messages from unknown numbers. WhatsApp’s machine learning model analyzes message patterns directly on the device. If it detects signs of a potential scam, a warning may appear within the chat. The user then has the option to block the number, report it, or continue the conversation. If the alert seems incorrect, the chat can also be marked as "trusted."
This feature will not label every message from an unknown number as a scam. Its model attempts to identify methods and conversation patterns commonly found in previous scam messages. The goal is to alert the user that the sender might be a scammer; the final decision to block the number or continue the conversation rests with the user.
Where to Find the Setting and How to Enable It?
If the 'Scam Alert' option has appeared in your WhatsApp account, open the app and go to Settings. Then, tap on 'Account' and look for the 'Scam Alert' option; you can enable the feature from there. This setting has currently reached only a limited number of Android beta users, so not every WhatsApp user will see this option yet. The feature has not been released for iPhone users at this time; they may have to wait a little longer.
Will the feature appear after an update?
Many people are wondering if they will get this feature in WhatsApp after an update. According to information provided by the company, this feature has not yet been rolled out to everyone; WhatsApp is gradually making it available to select users. If you do not see 'Scam Alert' in your account settings, there is no need to force-search for it or try to enable it using third-party apps. You will only be able to use the feature once it becomes available for your account.
Messages are checked locally on the phone.
A crucial aspect of 'Scam Alert' is user chat privacy. According to Meta, suspicious messages are analyzed directly on the phone. The content of the messages is not sent to WhatsApp or Meta for this analysis, nor does the feature automatically report any chats. Once a warning appears, the user decides whether to block the number, report it, or continue the conversation.
Reporting a number yourself is a separate action; user permission is required to submit a report. Keeping 'Scam Alert' enabled is optional, and it can be turned off in the settings. While it is hard to predict exactly how effective this feature will be in preventing scams, it can certainly warn people and prompt them to think twice.
