In which cyber thugs take advantage of your emotions and curiosity. The whole game starts after a blurred image appears on your WhatsApp. It ends only when your phone is hacked or your bank account is emptied. After all, how does this scam happen? How to protect yourself from becoming its victim.

How does the Blur Image Scam work?

In this scam, a blurred photo is sent to you on WhatsApp from an unknown number. Such a caption is given in that photo which increases the curiosity to see that photo. Are you in this photo?, Look, I have found your old photo! Click and see who is this. After reading such lines, you are unable to stop yourself from clicking on that photo. But this one click of yours can make you a pauper.

When you click on the photo or try to open it, you are redirected to a link. This link takes you to a fake website where you are asked for your details, OTP or bank details. In some cases, this link can also put a virus or malware in your phone.

What can be the harm?

Your bank account can be emptied. Your social media accounts can be hacked. Your personal information can be stolen and your mobile can get a virus or spyware.

How to protect yourself from this

Avoid clicking on photos or links from unknown numbers. Make WhatsApp's privacy settings strong. Keep two-step verification on your WhatsApp. Apart from this, keep an anti-virus app installed on your phone. If you have clicked by mistake, change the password immediately and inform the bank.
