In today's world, cyber attacks have become a major global issue. They are no longer limited to large corporations or government institutions; ordinary users are now also being affected. Everyday individuals are increasingly falling victim to phishing, malware, ransomware, account hacking, and online fraud. If you suspect that your phone, computer, or online account has been compromised by a cyber attack, you should take immediate action.

If you suspect a cyber attack, the first step is to disconnect your device from the internet. Turn off the Wi-Fi and unplug any Ethernet cables. Also, disable mobile data on your phone. This severs the connection between your device and the attacker, helping to prevent malware from spreading further or transmitting data.

However, if a cybersecurity expert or an investigative agency has advised you to keep the device turned on, it is best to follow their instructions.

Additionally, if the attack occurred via email, SMS, WhatsApp message, or a suspicious website, do not click on the link again. Do not open any unknown files that have been downloaded. Sometimes, a minor mistake can reactivate the malware.

Furthermore, if you suspect an account has been hacked, change its password immediately using a secure device. Prioritize accounts related to email, banking, social media, and cloud storage. Experts recommend using a unique and strong password for every account to ensure security.

Wherever possible, enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This provides an extra layer of security for your account, even if your password is stolen. If banking details, card information, or UPI-related data are leaked during a cyber attack, contact your bank immediately.

Also, many people immediately delete suspicious messages, emails, or files after being hacked. Before proceeding, you should save information such as screenshots, email headers, transaction details, phone numbers, and links, as these details are required when filing a cybercrime complaint.

In the event of financial fraud, account hacking, or the theft of personal information, you should immediately inform the concerned bank or service provider. Additionally, a toll-free number—1930—has been launched in India for reporting cybercrimes, where you can register your complaint.
