What is the Vayo Anand Yojana? What gift is the Delhi government going to give to senior citizens?
The Delhi government is set to launch a significant scheme for senior citizens known as the 'Vayo Anand Yojana'. Under this scheme, centers will be developed to provide a conducive environment where senior citizens can relax during their leisure time, socialize, and engage in various activities. These centers will host yoga and meditation classes for senior citizens. Additionally, facilities such as monthly medical camps and first-aid kits will be available on-site.
The government will provide financial assistance to organizations operating these recreation centers. Officials stated that Delhi's senior citizens are an invaluable asset to society, and ensuring their dignity, health, active lifestyle, and social engagement is a priority for the government.
**Facilities under the Vayo Anand Yojana**
These recreation centers will offer amenities such as indoor games (like carrom and ludo), seating arrangements, fans, coolers, televisions, and computers. Newspapers, magazines, and books will also be available so that senior citizens can make the most of their leisure time. Yoga and meditation classes will be conducted at the centers. Furthermore, events such as International Yoga Day, Senior Citizens' Day, and national festivals will be celebrated; at least 5–6 such programs will be organized annually. The scheme also includes provisions for monthly medical camps and first-aid kits. Activities such as health and fitness classes, outdoor tours, storytelling sessions, painting, craft, pottery, nutritional counseling, and indoor/outdoor sports will also be organized.
**Centers designed with senior citizens in mind**
The recreation centers will remain open for at least five days a week and for a minimum of seven hours daily, operating between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM. The centers will feature adequate ventilation and restroom facilities. To ensure convenience for senior citizens, priority will be given to locating centers on the ground floor or ensuring the building has elevator access. Priority will also be given to organizing programs specifically for women, differently-abled, and transgender senior citizens. Additionally, arrangements will be in place to coordinate with nearby police stations and hospitals for immediate assistance during emergencies. Under the scheme, a recreation center must have at least 200 members aged 60 years or older.
**Financial Assistance for the 'Vayo Anand' Scheme**
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that under the 'Vayo Anand' scheme, eligible recreation centers will receive financial assistance of ₹2.40 lakh per financial year—amounting to ₹20,000 per month. This amount will be disbursed in two equal half-yearly installments. The assistance will be provided to centers catering to senior citizens aged 60 and above. Operators must prioritize making the aforementioned facilities and amenities available at their centers. These centers must be located in Delhi and operate within community spaces. The scheme covers centers run by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) facilities, and those operating in community spaces like *chaupals*.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the objective of the 'Vayo Anand' scheme is to provide senior citizens with a safe and convenient space in their own neighborhoods where they can spend time with peers, engage in recreational and health-related activities, and lead an active social life free from loneliness. The government is committed to strengthening such systems for the welfare of senior citizens, thereby ensuring a better environment for them to lead a dignified and healthy life.
