The central government has given a major gift to railway employees ahead of Diwali. The government has approved a 78-day 'Performance-Linked Bonus' (PLB) for railway employees. Let’s find out how much of a bonus they will receive.

Diwali has brought a special gift for railway employees. The Union Cabinet recently approved a Diwali bonus for them, sparking a wave of joy among the staff. The government has sanctioned this PLB for over 11.40 lakh non-gazetted railway employees.

Following this approval, there is keen interest in exactly how much each employee will receive. Since the bonus is calculated based on specific rules and a defined salary ceiling, the amount varies from person to person—not every employee receives the same bonus. Let’s look at what these employees can expect.

How much of a bonus will the employees receive?

A set formula is used to calculate the bonus for railway employees, which caps the maximum payout for eligible staff at ₹17,951. In other words, under this formula, no eligible employee can receive a bonus exceeding this amount. Depending on an individual's eligibility and the specific calculation rules, the actual amount received could also be lower.

What is the government's decision?

Following the Cabinet's approval, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision. He stated that the government has taken three significant steps, one of which is the approval of a 78-day bonus for approximately 11.40 lakh railway employees.

This bonus serves as a Diwali gift for the railway staff who work tirelessly—day and night—often remaining away from their families during the festive season to keep the trains running and ensure operations continue on the tracks and in the workshops. The government will spend a total of approximately ₹2,009 crore on this bonus. On what basis is the bonus awarded?

In the Railways, eligible employees are granted a productivity-linked bonus, governed by provisions tied to both their individual performance and the overall performance of the Railways. The objective is to motivate employees and encourage better work performance. This bonus is not automatically granted to all railway employees; it depends on meeting specific, prescribed eligibility criteria.
