A crucial cabinet meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was held on August 25, during which several important issues were approved. Among these, the cabinet sanctioned a significant scheme for women known as the 'Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yojana.' Under this scheme, elderly women will be granted the facility of free travel for life on State Transport Corporation buses. This decision by the Yogi government, announced just before Raksha Bandhan, has become a major topic of discussion.
The Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yojana is a significant initiative by the government aimed at women. The scheme provides for lifelong free travel on all Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses for women aged 60 years and above.
**Who is eligible for this scheme?**
The scheme will benefit women aged 60 years or older. To avail of this benefit, women will need to present an Aadhaar card or Voter ID showing a local address as proof of identity; this will also serve to verify their age. Essentially, passengers will need to carry their Aadhaar or Voter ID card while traveling on Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses.
Women will not be required to submit a formal application for this scheme. A free ticket can be obtained simply by showing proof of identity—such as an Aadhaar card or Voter ID—during the journey. It is estimated that there are over 10 million (1 crore) elderly women in Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, the UP cabinet has approved the purchase of 250 new electric buses to make public transport in the state more eco-friendly. This move aims to provide better facilities for passengers and help reduce pollution. A sum of ₹425 crore will be spent on this electric bus initiative.
