What is the country's future plan?
India is one of the world's largest LPG consumers and is seeking to diversify its supply sources amidst tensions in West Asia. Consequently, India is negotiating to procure more Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from the US under annual contracts for 2027.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, a Bloomberg report states that the government has directed state-owned refining companies—Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation—to source at least 15 percent of India's LPG imports for 2027 through US term contracts.
US: India's largest supplier
The US is gradually emerging as India's largest LPG supplier. A record 3.9 million tonnes of LPG have been supplied from there up to August this year. According to the report, state-run refining companies plan to issue a joint tender for US LPG after evaluating potential suppliers and their offers.
The US administration is making efforts to increase energy exports to India, given that India is one of the world's largest importers of oil and gas. However, the trade deal negotiations between the two countries, ongoing since last year, have not yet been finalized.
