IIT, (Indian Institute of Technology) - These are the prestigious engineering colleges of the country where every student dreams of admission. Admission is given after passing the JEE Advanced exam and the competition is tough. Apart from UG, PG courses, admission can also be taken in doctoral programs from here. This institute of the Central Government offers courses in engineering, science and technology.

NIT, (National Institute of Technology) – This is also among the top engineering colleges in India but its rank is lower than IIT. These are also set up by the Central Government and focus on technical education and research. For admission, one has to give JEE Mains but one has to face less competition than IIT.

IIIT, (Indian Institute of Information Technology) – This institute offers courses in information technology, computer science and related fields. These institutes are set up in collaboration with the Central Government, State Government and industry partners. Selection is based on the rank of JEE Main but admission can be obtained even with a low rank. UG, PG, doctoral programs can also be done from here.

Broadly speaking, all three are prestigious institutes of engineering but according to the rank, IIT, NIT and IIIT come on top.

What is the fee structure?

IIT - The fee of B.Tech can be between 2.2 to 3.2 lakhs per year. Other expenses like hostel mess etc. cost between 1.5 to 2 lakhs. Thus, the total cost of four years of B.Tech can be between 10 to 14 lakhs.

NIT - According to the campus, the annual fee of B.Tech can be between 1.4 to 2.4 lakhs. Hostel and mess can cost between 1.2 to 2.2 lakhs per year and thus the average cost of four years of B.Tech can be between 8 to 10 lakhs. It is cheaper than IIT.

IIIT – Depending on where you have taken admission, i.e. in which campus, the annual fee can be between 1.5 to 3 lakhs. You may have to pay 1.2 to 2.5 lakhs per year for mess and hostel. Thus the estimated cost for a four class student can be between 8 to 14 lakhs.
