Why might prices rise on August 1?
Following intense US airstrikes in Iraq yesterday, Brent crude prices in the international market surged by 7.4%, closing at $90.31 per barrel. This sudden spike in crude oil and global gas prices has increased import costs for state-run oil companies in India; consequently, the price of domestic LPG cylinders could rise during the review meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning.
India to import LPG from the US
India's largest refining company, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), is planning to acquire a 50% stake in Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). According to a tender document, this move is being made as part of preparations to increase Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) imports from the United States.
Until now, IOC relied on 'time-chartered' (leased) vessels to import LPG from abroad, with charter rates fluctuating based on international oil and gas price trends. By acquiring a 50% stake in VLGCs, IOC will become the first Indian refining company to own such vessels. This move is expected to reduce logistics costs associated with importing LPG from distant countries like the US.
