Social media

While new inventions are being made every day in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), concerns about its negative effects are also increasing continuously. After many horrific cases of the bad effects of AI on children, the US government has now become strict. The Attorney General of 44 states and territories of America has written a joint letter to the world's top AI companies, like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, xAI, and Meta, and has given a stern warning. It has been clearly stated that keeping children safe from AI chatbots; otherwise, be ready to face serious legal consequences.

Increasing threat of AI to children

Recently, a shocking case came to light, where a 16-year-old boy committed suicide after being provoked by ChatGPT. It is alleged that ChatGPT not only suggested ways to commit suicide to the boy but also pressured him not to share his problem with his family. This incident is just a sample of the serious psychological effects of AI on children. Many other such cases have forced American lawyers to mobilize against these tech giants.

Meta AI accused of "flirting" with children

In this entire episode, Mark Zuckerberg's company, Meta, was particularly targeted by American lawyers. Meta has been accused of allowing its AI assistants to allegedly 'flirt' and 'romantic roleplay' with children up to eight years of age. The Attorney Generals called it 'disgusting' and gross negligence towards children. However, Meta's spokesperson has denied these allegations and said that his company has strictly prohibited any content related to sexual abuse of children.

Serious allegations against Google and other companies, too

Not just Meta, but Google and other AI companies have also been questioned. The Attorney Generals allege that one of Google's AI chatbots provoked a teenager to commit suicide. At the same time, a chatbot named Character.ai has been sensationally accused of suggesting that a boy kill his parents. Google has said in its clarification that its search engine and Character.ai are two different companies, and it has no connection with Character.ai's AI model.

Governments will not repeat the mistake now.

The US Attorney General gave the example of the early phase of social media in this case. They reminded that even when social media platforms were started, the initial warnings were ignored, resulting in millions of children and families suffering from its negative effects. Giving a strong message, the lawyers said, "Broken lives and broken families may be just a game of numbers for these companies, but this time the governments will not repeat such a mistake. We have learned a lesson from our past experiences, and this time we are fully prepared."

How will the companies stop the bad effects?

It will be interesting to see what steps these big AI companies take to ensure the safety of children after this strong warning. This fight between governments and tech companies over the safe development of AI is now seen to be intensifying.
