Want to cut your electricity bill in half? Try these 5 most effective tricks..
Tips to Save on Electricity Bills: Amid rising inflation, electricity bills have impacted household budgets. However, with a little prudence and some changes to daily habits, you can significantly control electricity consumption. Make these five simple measures part of your lifestyle starting today to lower your home's electricity bill: using the AC at the right temperature, opting for 5-star rated appliances, using LED lights and BLDC fans, preventing energy waste from standby mode, and properly maintaining your refrigerator can lead to substantial monthly savings.
**Proper Use of AC**
Always operate the AC at a temperature between 24°C and 26°C. Raising the temperature setting by just 1 degree can save approximately 6 percent on electricity.
Keep the ceiling fan on alongside the AC; this cools the room faster and reduces the load on the AC. Additionally, clean the AC air filter every 15 days. A dirty filter reduces cooling efficiency, leading to increased electricity consumption.
**Buy Only 5-Star Rated Appliances**
Whenever you purchase a new refrigerator, AC, or washing machine, look for the 5-star label indicating energy efficiency. 5-star appliances consume significantly less electricity compared to 3-star models. Furthermore, old and worn-out appliances tend to draw more power as they age, so replace them in a timely manner.
**Use Only LED Bulbs and BLDC Fans**
Immediately replace old, traditional bulbs or CFLs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, which save up to 80 percent more electricity than conventional bulbs. Additionally, replace old induction-motor fans with modern BLDC (Brushless DC) technology fans; these consume 40 to 50 percent less electricity compared to standard fans.
Avoid 'Phantom Load' (Standby Mode)
We often switch off appliances like TVs, set-top boxes, washing machines, or mobile chargers using only the remote while leaving the main power switch on. This state is known as standby mode or 'phantom load.' Unplug the appliance or turn off the power switch when it is not in use, as these devices continue to consume up to 10% of electricity even in standby mode.
Smart Use of the Refrigerator
Never place the refrigerator flush against the wall; leave a gap of at least 12 inches behind it to ensure proper air circulation. Avoid opening the refrigerator door frequently or leaving it open for more than 30 seconds. Do not place hot food or milk directly into the refrigerator; let it cool down to room temperature first before storing it inside.
Beware of Market Gimmicks
Many fake power-saving devices or capacitor gadgets claiming to cut electricity bills in half are sold online and in the market. Attaching external devices to or tampering with government or digital meters is strictly illegal and can lead to heavy fines and legal action. The only safe and legitimate way to reduce your electricity bill is by conserving energy. If you wish to eliminate electricity bills entirely, you can install rooftop solar panels under the Central Government's 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana,' which offers a substantial government subsidy.
