Visa-free stay in Thailand for Indians to change; new rule effective September 15

Thailand’s Ministry of Interior officially announced this change in the Royal Gazette on August 31. Citizens of India, along with those from 60 other countries, will continue to enjoy visa-free entry; however, after September 15, the maximum duration of stay will be limited to 30 days.

Impact on Indian travelers

The visa-free entry privilege for Indian passport holders has not been abolished entirely; they can still travel to Thailand without a visa. The change applies only to the duration of the stay.

Travelers wishing to stay in Thailand for longer than 30 days must obtain the appropriate visa or complete the necessary immigration procedures based on their travel plans. Therefore, those planning long trips on or after September 15 should verify the duration of their stay in advance.

Minimal impact on short-term travelers

This change will have little impact on Indian travelers visiting Thailand for typical one- or two-week holidays. A 30-day visa-free period remains sufficient for most short, routine trips. However, those planning extended vacations or multi-city tours need to be mindful of the new rule.

Thailand has also established a separate rule for visa-free entry via land borders. Such travelers are generally permitted visa-free entry a maximum of two times per calendar year. This rule is particularly significant for frequent travelers to Thailand from neighboring countries.

In addition to India, the new 30-day rule will apply to travelers from a total of 60 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, the UK, and the USA. Indian travelers visiting Thailand after September 15 should plan their trips keeping the 30-day limit in mind.
