The central government is preparing to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a scheme that employs in rural areas. A proposal has been made to replace the two-decade-old MGNREGA with the 'Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural)' or VB-G RAM Ji Act. This bill is said to be designed in line with the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047 (Developed India 2047).

Under this act, every adult member of a rural family engaged in manual labor will receive a legal guarantee of 125 days of employment instead of 100 days. According to the government, the objective of this scheme is not only to provide employment but also to build paved roads and infrastructure in rural areas. It is said that this scheme will benefit not only rural laborers but also farmers. States will be allowed to suspend work for 60 days so that laborers can contribute to agriculture.

MGNREGA Job Card will no longer be used
Under this scheme, not only the name will change, but several guidelines will also be modified. For example, the employment guarantee will be for 125 days instead of 100 days. Gram Panchayats will create their own 'Viksit Gram Panchayat Yojana' (Developed Village Panchayat Scheme). Currently, laborers need to obtain a job card to participate in MGNREGA. However, this card will no longer be used for employment. Laborers will need to obtain a Rural Employment Guarantee Card. They will receive work based on this card.

How to obtain a Rural Employment Guarantee Card
Any member of a rural family who is over 18 years of age can apply for a Rural Employment Guarantee Card. The interested person will have to go to the Gram Panchayat office. There, they will have to register their name, age, and address.

Required Documents
To obtain a Rural Employment Guarantee Card, an Aadhaar card, proof of residence with the address of the village where they live, age proof, and a bank account number will be required. The eKYC process may also be required to obtain the card.

Special Cards under the G RAM Ji Scheme
Special job cards will also be issued under the VB-G RAM Ji scheme. Single women, that is, women living alone, will be issued special rural employment guarantee cards. In addition, people with disabilities, senior citizens above 60 years of age, transgender individuals, and members of certain tribal communities will also receive this special card. The color of this special card will also be different from other job cards.
