UPI Payment Blocked: Will UPI remain down all day on September 4? Find out the timeframe during which digital payments will not be possible.
If you use UPI for your daily expenses, this news is for you. UPI transactions will be unavailable for a period on Friday, September 4, which might cause some inconvenience. To avoid any trouble, it is advisable to withdraw cash in advance. Let’s find out which bank's UPI service will be affected and when it will resume.
Which bank's UPI service will be unavailable?
The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced that UPI transactions will not be possible on September 4, 2026. According to the bank, UPI services will be down from 12:15 AM to 1:00 AM on that day. This means you will be unable to make UPI payments via SBI for a total of 45 minutes. However, the bank has clarified that if the maintenance work is completed ahead of schedule, services will resume before the planned time.
Which types of payments will be affected?
According to the bank, large payments cannot be made during the 45-minute window when UPI services are suspended. However, you will still be able to easily make small payments of up to ₹1,000 using UPI Lite without entering a PIN. Additionally, you can maintain a balance of up to ₹5,000 in your UPI Lite account during this time.
Will there be a charge on UPI payments?
There has been ongoing speculation that the government is preparing to levy an MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) on UPI transactions, with a notification likely to be issued by mid-September. However, the government has already clarified that the general public will not be required to pay any extra charges; this fee will apply only to large merchants.
What is the transaction limit for UPI?
Regarding SBI UPI, you can generally transact up to ₹1 lakh per day, although the limit may be higher in certain instances. For instance, transactions of up to ₹2 lakh can be made for capital markets and insurance, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPOs, taxes, and school or college fees.
