In today's era, people prefer digital payments over cash transactions. The popularity of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has increased significantly among the public. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) regularly introduces new features in UPI for the convenience of users. One such feature is UPI Lite, which is a lite version of the Unified Payments Interface. It does not require internet connectivity for transactions and can be used even on feature phones.

Features of UPI Lite include the ability to transfer small amounts in real-time without internet access. It acts as an on-device wallet feature, allowing users to transfer funds seamlessly. UPI Lite can be used on platforms like BHIM and Paytm. Currently, a total of eight banks are allowed to use the UPI Lite facility. Transactions up to ₹4000 can be made through UPI Lite within 24 hours, and there is no limit on the number of transactions.

For UPI payments, users usually require a 6 or 4-digit PIN. Money can be transferred through UPI Lite even without a PIN. While users can receive money through UPI, UPI Lite allows only debit transactions.

To enable UPI Lite on the BHIM app:

Open the BHIM app and go to the UPI Lite X Balance option.

Click on the Enable button.

Tick the Allow box for offline transactions and click Enable now.

After this, you have to add funds to your UPI Lite wallet.

Click on Enable UPI Lite X and enter the desired amount.

Once funds are added to your wallet, you can start using UPI Lite.

In September 2022, the Reserve Bank of India launched UPI Lite in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to facilitate quick and easy transactions for small amounts. Since then, users have found the feature extremely convenient, and it is now accepted by around eight banks.
