The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new change for UPI Lite, which will come into effect from April 1, 2025. Through a recently issued circular, NPCI has directed all banks to include the "Transfer Out" feature, enhancing the functionality of this app. Read in the NPCI circular, this latest rule is to enhance the convenience of the user.

With the new "Transfer Out" feature, users will be able to easily withdraw money from their UPI Lite balance and send it back to the original bank account, that too without closing the app.

In addition, NPCI has introduced a new requirement for all banks offering UPI Lite that they have to keep track of the Lite Reference Number (LRN) and ensure daily checks to match these balances with NPCI's data. This will help ensure that the LRN balance is always in sync with NPCI's records, making the system more reliable and transparent for users.

Meanwhile, the NPCI circular further states that UPI apps with UPI Lite activated will have an app passcode, biometrics, or pattern-based lock at the time of app login and these changes will come into effect by March 31, 2025. However, all other rules for the app will remain the same.

UPI Lite: What is it?

UPI Lite allows users to make PIN-less transactions of less than Rs 500. The app also offers a user-friendly experience, processing low-value transactions in real time without relying on the sender's bank's core system. It is worth noting that this app is a customer-friendly app that enables low-value transactions in real-time without using a sender bank's core banking system.

Apart from this, the key benefits include a clutter-free passbook, single-click two-factor authentication for transactions less than Rs 500, and more. The current wallet limit of the app is Rs 5,000, and the per transaction limit is Rs 500.
