Online DL Address Change: A driving license is not merely a permit to drive a vehicle; it is also accepted nationwide as a valid form of identification and proof of address. However, having an incorrect or outdated address can lead to complications regarding traffic challans, RC transfers, license renewals, or other legal procedures.
You can now update your driving license (DL) address from the comfort of your home using a mobile phone or laptop via the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' 'Parivahan Sarathi' portal. Under the Digital India initiative, this entire process can be completed on the portal using Aadhaar-based e-KYC, eliminating the need to visit an RTO.
List of Required Documents
To apply for an online address change on your driving license, you will need scanned copies of certain documents. Therefore, before starting the online application process, ensure you have scanned copies of the following documents ready:
A scanned copy of your current driving license. Proof of the new address (e.g., Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, ration card, rent agreement, or an electricity, water, or telephone bill issued within the last three months). Proof of identity (e.g., PAN card, passport, or Aadhaar card). Passport-sized photograph, a digital signature on white paper, and a self-declaration medical form (Form 1).
How to Change Your DL Address from Home
Visit the official Transport Department website (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) and select your state. On the homepage, click on the option 'Apply for Change of Address' or 'Services on Driving License'. Enter your DL number and date of birth, click 'Get DL Details', and confirm your profile. Select your new RTO office and choose the Aadhaar-based e-KYC option to avoid visiting the RTO in person. Tick the 'Change of Address in DL' checkbox from the list of services. Accurately fill in your new and permanent address in the form. Upload the new address proof, Form 1, photograph, and signature. Pay the prescribed government fee online and download the acknowledgment slip.
Complete Process for NOC and New RTO Registration Upon Relocating
Select your current state on the 'Parivahan Sarathi' portal. Navigate to the 'DL Services' section and enter your Driving License (DL) number and date of birth. From the list of services, select the 'Issue of NOC' option. Specify the new state, the new RTO, and the reason for the NOC. Upload a copy of your existing DL and pay the requisite government fee. Following verification, the original RTO will issue the NOC online.
Submit the NOC to the RTO of the New State
Select your new state on the portal. Click on 'Apply for Change of Address' and enter your DL number and date of birth. Provide the NOC number and the date of issuance obtained from the previous RTO. Enter your new address and upload the new address proof along with the NOC obtained online. Pay the address change fee. Once approved, the new driving license will be sent to your new address via Speed Post.
