According to the India Skills Report 2026, Uttar Pradesh has secured the top spot in state-wise data. Driven by a large population and increasing access to higher education and skill development programs, the state is producing a significant number of job-ready youth. Maharashtra ranks second, and Karnataka third. Maharashtra is home to major employment hubs like Mumbai and Pune, offering job opportunities across sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and IT. Meanwhile, Karnataka has benefited from its strong position in the technology sector. Bengaluru boasts a vast network of engineering institutes, startups, and global tech companies, creating increased opportunities for youth with technical and professional skills.

According to the report, India’s overall employability rate has increased from 54.81% in 2025 to 56.35% in 2026. In other words, a significant portion of the youth population is considered part of the employable workforce, possessing the skills necessary for jobs. The report assesses employability based on various factors, including technical skills, communication abilities, cognitive skills, and domain-specific knowledge.
Small Cities Emerging as New Talent Hubs
The report also highlights the growing role of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. These cities are increasingly contributing to the nation’s workforce, signaling a reduced reliance on major metropolitan areas for employment and talent. Meanwhile, the evolving employment landscape is driving a steady rise in demand for skills related to technology and AI. Companies are moving beyond selecting candidates solely based on degrees and academic qualifications; they now prioritize practical skills, digital literacy, problem-solving capabilities, communication, adaptability, and the aptitude to learn new things. According to the report, India possesses approximately 16% of the world’s AI talent and is home to over 600,000 AI professionals.
High Employment Opportunities in These Sectors
The report identifies technology, banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), manufacturing, renewable energy, and healthcare as key hiring sectors. These industries continue to demand skilled candidates to keep pace with technological advancements and evolving operational needs.
Gig Workforce Could Reach 23.5 Million by 2030
The report also offers projections regarding India’s gig economy, estimating that the country’s gig workforce could reach 23.5 million by 2030. This growth is expected to increase the prominence of flexible and non-traditional work options alongside conventional employment models.
