UP Government Announces ₹40 Lakh Safety Insurance for Sanitation Workers: CM Yogi’s Diwali Gift on Valmiki Jayanti

In a major welfare move, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a safety insurance cover of ₹35 to ₹40 lakh for sanitation workers across the state. The announcement came on October 7, 2025, as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the Valmiki Jayanti celebrations, calling it a Diwali gift for thousands of sanitation workers and their families.
CM Yogi: “Your Safety is Society’s Safety”
Speaking at the event, CM Yogi emphasized the dignity and importance of sanitation workers, saying, “Your safety is the safety of society. Your honor is the honor of Lord Valmiki’s legacy.” He highlighted that the government’s upcoming initiatives aim to ensure both financial and social security for these frontline workers who keep cities clean and livable.
The Chief Minister announced that sanitation workers and contractual employees will now receive their payments directly from the state corporation into their bank accounts, eliminating the role of outsourcing agencies. This move is designed to ensure transparency, prevent exploitation, and guarantee timely payments.
₹5 Lakh Health Insurance and ₹40 Lakh Accident Cover
Under this new scheme, sanitation workers will also be covered under a ₹5 lakh health insurance policy. Additionally, the government is coordinating with banks to ensure that in the unfortunate event of an accident or death, the worker’s family receives ₹35–40 lakh through a dedicated safety insurance plan.
Yogi Adityanath mentioned that similar insurance coverage has already been provided to 80,000 Home Guards in the state. “Now, sanitation workers will also be linked to this system, ensuring their families are protected in case of any unforeseen tragedy,” he added.
Direct Benefits and Improved Wages
The Chief Minister further assured that no one will be able to exploit sanitation workers anymore, stating that the government will soon transfer ₹16,000 to ₹20,000 directly into their bank accounts as part of the new wage structure.
A day before the Valmiki Jayanti event, CM Yogi had honored sanitation workers in Kashi under the “Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada” initiative, distributing hygiene kits and showering flowers upon the workers in recognition of their contributions.
Healthcare Benefits Under Ayushman Bharat
In addition to financial security, CM Yogi announced that sanitation workers and Swachhata Mitras will soon be provided with Ayushman Bharat health cards, offering them and their families ₹5 lakh annual coverage for medical treatment.
He said, “The government is committed to ensuring that no sanitation worker or their family suffers due to lack of medical care. They will now have access to quality healthcare under Ayushman Bharat.”
Honoring Valmiki’s Legacy
During the Valmiki Jayanti celebration, the Chief Minister also paid tribute to Maharishi Valmiki, describing him as a “visionary sage and the creator of the world’s first great epic.” A short documentary on Valmiki’s life and teachings was screened during the event.
CM Yogi remarked, “Maharishi Valmiki is not just a symbol of wisdom but also the guiding light of India’s spiritual and cultural tradition. He gave the world the Ramayana and inspired generations with his teachings.”
Ending Exploitation and Building Respect
The Chief Minister criticized previous administrations, particularly the Samajwadi Party government, accusing them of neglecting sanitation workers’ welfare and allowing their exploitation. He reaffirmed that under the current government, every sanitation worker would receive due respect, fair wages, and complete social security.
A Step Toward Dignity and Empowerment
The new insurance and welfare package marks a significant step in improving the working conditions of sanitation staff across the state. By offering financial protection, health benefits, and direct payment systems, the initiative ensures that the workers’ contributions are valued and safeguarded.
As CM Yogi stated, the scheme is more than just a festive gesture — it’s a long-term commitment to social justice, dignity, and empowerment for one of the most essential yet often overlooked sections of the workforce.
