The government often releases data on how much money is lying in the public and private banks of India, which no one has claimed. This money is called Unclaimed Deposits, which is in accounts like savings accounts (bank deposits) and FDs.
According to a written reply given by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha, Indian banks had unclaimed deposits of Rs 67,003 crore by the end of June 2025. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as of June 30, 2025, public sector banks had unclaimed deposits of Rs 58,330.26 crore and private banks had unclaimed deposits of Rs 8,673.72 crore.
SBI has the highest unclaimed money
Among the public sector banks, SBI is on top with unclaimed deposits of Rs 19,329.92 crore, followed by Punjab National Bank (PNB) with Rs 6,910.67 crore and Canara Bank with Rs 6,278.14 crore.
Who is on top among private banks?
Pankaj Chaudhary said that among the private banks, ICICI Bank has the highest unclaimed deposits of Rs 2,063.45 crore, followed by HDFC Bank with Rs 1,609.56 crore and Axis Bank with Rs 1,360.16 crore.
How to claim an unclaimed amount
To increase access to unclaimed deposits and simplify the search process, RBI has launched a centralized web portal, UDGAM (Unclaimed Deposits- Gateway to Access Information), for the people.

For this, first go to the UDGAM portal and click on Register.
Register with your mobile number.
Log in with OTP and enter the name of the account holder whose unclaimed deposit amount you want to claim
In the "Select Bank" dropdown, tick the box in front of the name of the bank in which you want to find the deposit amount. You can also select 'All'
You will have to enter PAN, Voter ID, Driving License number, Passport number, or Date of Birth.
Then click on Search, and the details will be displayed.
How to claim:
Visit the bank where you have an account or unclaimed deposit.
Fill the "Claim Form" with all the required details about you and the account.
Submit the form along with the required documents like KYC documents, deposit slips, and photographs.
If you are the legal heir, you will also have to submit a copy of the death certificate of the account holder.
The bank will release the money to you after verifying your application
