Ujjwala Yojana: LPG Cylinders to Cost ₹300 Less as Govt Extends Subsidy for Millions of Families

New Delhi – In a major relief to millions of households, the central government has announced the continuation of the ₹300 subsidy on domestic LPG cylinders for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). The decision was approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ensuring affordable cooking gas for low-income families.
According to the official statement, the ₹300 subsidy will apply to each 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for PMUY beneficiaries, with the benefit available for up to nine refills in the current financial year, extending through FY 2025-26. The government has earmarked an estimated ₹12,000 crore for the scheme’s implementation.
Why the Subsidy Matters
India imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirements, making domestic prices sensitive to global fluctuations. To shield PMUY households from these price shocks and encourage the continued use of LPG, the government had initially introduced a ₹200 subsidy per cylinder in May 2022.
This support was available for up to 12 refills per year and was also extended proportionately to 5 kg cylinders. In March 2024, the subsidy was increased to ₹300 per cylinder, further reducing the financial burden on families.
Increased LPG Usage Among Beneficiaries
Data shows that the subsidy has positively impacted LPG adoption among Ujjwala households. The average per capita consumption (PCC) of LPG among PMUY beneficiaries has steadily increased:
-
2019-20: Around 3 refills per year
-
2022-23: 3.68 refills per year
-
2024-25: 4.47 refills per year
This indicates that more families are regularly using clean cooking fuel, reducing dependence on traditional polluting sources like firewood and kerosene.
Overview of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
Launched in May 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to women from low-income households across India. The initiative is designed to promote health, reduce indoor air pollution, and empower women by eliminating the need for labor-intensive cooking methods.
As of July 1, 2025, the government has distributed 10.33 crore LPG connections under the scheme nationwide. Each beneficiary receives a complete package that includes:
-
One LPG cylinder
-
Pressure regulator
-
Safety hose
-
DGCC booklet
-
Security deposit for installation charges
The scheme has been a significant step in advancing India’s clean energy and women empowerment goals.
What the Latest Decision Means for Families
The extension of the ₹300 per cylinder subsidy means that PMUY beneficiaries can save up to ₹2,700 annually if they avail all nine subsidised refills allowed for this financial year. This continued support is expected to maintain momentum in LPG adoption and help improve health outcomes in rural and low-income urban areas.
By ensuring affordable access to LPG, the government hopes to reinforce the shift away from harmful cooking fuels, improve the quality of life for millions of women, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
