The Central Government has announced another major expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a flagship scheme that has already empowered over 12 crore households across India. As part of this fresh push, the government has approved the distribution of 25 lakh new LPG connections free of cost, ensuring that more low-income families can shift from traditional fuels like wood, coal, and cow dung cakes to clean cooking energy.

With this addition, the total number of Ujjwala connections will rise to 10.58 crore, supported by a budget allocation of ₹676 crore. This move is being seen as a big relief for poor and rural households struggling with high cooking expenses and health issues caused by smoke-filled kitchens.

What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?

Launched on 1 May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide free LPG connections in the name of women household heads, especially in below-poverty-line (BPL) families.

The scheme helps beneficiaries move away from unsafe cooking practices, which not only harm women’s health but also damage the environment. By promoting clean fuel, the program contributes to women’s empowerment, improved healthcare, and rural development.

The success of Phase 1, which crossed 10 crore LPG connections, led to the launch of Ujjwala 2.0, under which over 2.34 crore new connections were already distributed till December 2024.

Key Features of Ujjwala Yojana

  • Free LPG connections for eligible women from poor families.

  • Beneficiaries get LPG stoves, cylinders, and accessories at no cost.

  • 14.2 kg cylinder subsidy worth ₹2,200, or 5 kg cylinder subsidy worth ₹1,300.

Why This Expansion Matters

The government’s approval of 25 lakh new LPG connections under Ujjwala Yojana marks another milestone in its mission to provide clean, safe, and affordable cooking energy to every Indian household. Beyond reducing indoor air pollution and improving women’s health, the scheme also supports India’s energy transition and environmental goals.

By ensuring that the poorest sections of society no longer rely on unsafe fuels, the program continues to be a game-changer for rural households, particularly women.
