The central government has approved the distribution of 25 lakh additional free LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). With this expansion, the total number of Ujjwala connections across the country will rise to 10.58 crore households. The Union Cabinet has also sanctioned a budget of ₹676 crore to support this extension.

This scheme has already transformed the lives of more than 12 crore families, particularly in rural and economically weaker sections, by enabling them to cook food using LPG stoves instead of harmful traditional fuels like wood, coal, or cow dung. Alongside the free connection, beneficiaries can also get LPG cylinders at subsidized rates, often paying just ₹550 per cylinder.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?

Launched on May 1, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, the Ujjwala Yojana aims to promote clean cooking fuel and reduce the health hazards associated with smoky kitchens. The scheme is designed mainly for women from below-poverty-line (BPL) families, ensuring their well-being and empowerment.

The first phase of Ujjwala was a massive success, with over 10 crore LPG connections distributed. Later, the government launched Ujjwala 2.0, which has already provided more than 2.34 crore additional connections by December 2024.

Key Features of Ujjwala Yojana

  • Free LPG connections in the name of the female head of the household.

  • Subsidized cylinder prices: around ₹2200 support for a 14.2 kg cylinder and ₹1300 support for a 5 kg cylinder.

  • Beneficiaries also get interest-free loans for purchasing stoves and refills (₹565 for a single-burner stove, ₹990 for a double-burner stove).

  • The first refill and stove are provided free of cost.

  • Focus on BPL, SC/ST, EWS, Antyodaya families, tea workers, and marginalized communities.
