The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was started on 1 May 2016 in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. Under this, the government's target was to provide 5 crore connections earlier but later it was increased to 8 crore. This target was achieved in September 2019. In September 2023, the government approved 75 lakh additional connections, which were issued by July 2024. Now more than 10 crore families have joined the Ujjwala scheme.
