UIDAI: If you do these 5 things with your Aadhaar card, you won't fall victim to fraud..
The Aadhaar card is a very important document for every Indian citizen. If your Aadhaar falls into the wrong hands, you could suffer significant losses. You could become a victim of cybercrime, and your bank account could even be emptied. UIDAI has tweeted from its official X (formerly Twitter) account explaining how you can keep your Aadhaar card safe to avoid cyber fraud. This includes using a masked Aadhaar card, never sharing your OTP with anyone, locking your Aadhaar, locking your Aadhaar biometrics, and never posting your Aadhaar details online. From checking into a hotel to availing government schemes, an Aadhaar card is required for almost everything. This makes it easy for Aadhaar cards to be misused. People should take steps to protect their Aadhaar card from being misused.
UIDAI explains why keeping your Aadhaar safe is important
UIDAI has tweeted from its official X account, urging people to keep their Aadhaar card safe and warning them to be cautious of online scams and cyber fraud. In its tweet, UIDAI wrote, "Your Aadhaar is the gateway to essential services. You must keep it safe."
1. Never share your OTP
UIDAI has stated in its tweet that you should never share your OTP. If someone uses your Aadhaar anywhere, an OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar. Never share this OTP with anyone. Without this OTP, no one will be able to use your Aadhaar card.
2. Use a Masked Aadhaar
UIDAI has advised people to always use a masked Aadhaar. A masked Aadhaar is a feature available to protect against cyber fraud. In a masked Aadhaar, several important details, such as the complete 12-digit Aadhaar number, are not visible. Only the first 8 digits are displayed. You can download a masked Aadhaar card from the official UIDAI website.
3. Lock your Biometrics
UIDAI has advised keeping your Aadhaar biometrics locked. One feature locks your fingerprint, iris, and facial information, so that no one can misuse your biometrics for verification. You can do this through the new Aadhaar app.
4. Do not share your information online
People should also avoid posting their Aadhaar card information online. This is very sensitive information. Its public availability could pose a significant cybersecurity risk.
5. UIDAI provides a helpline number
The tweet also provides a toll-free cybercrime helpline number, 1930. You can report misuse or fraudulent activity on this number. You can also register your complaint on the UIDAI helpline 1947 or email help@uidai.gov.in.
