Students of undergraduate courses can now complete their degrees before the scheduled time. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved new rules allowing undergraduate (UG) students to complete their degrees before or after the standard stipulated period. UGC has approved this rule to increase flexibility in higher education. This decision was announced by UGC chief M Jagadeesh Kumar, emphasizing a student-centric approach to education.

Under the new guidelines issued by the UGC, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can offer two different options to students. First accelerated degree program and second extended degree program. Students can choose any one of the two options.

What is the option of accelerated and extended degree?

Under the accelerated degree program, students with exceptional academic performance or completing additional credits can graduate before the traditional deadline. On the other hand, under the extended degree program, students facing personal, financial, or academic challenges can take additional time to complete their degree without any penalty.

Both degrees will be valid.

Releasing a collection of UGC regulations, the UGC chairman said that UG degrees completed earlier or later will be considered equivalent to a standard duration degree. The move is expected to benefit students pursuing interdisciplinary studies, professional courses, or balancing education with other commitments. Institutions will also have the autonomy to implement these options based on infrastructure and academic resources. The UGC initiative is in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes learner-centric education and skill development.

Institutions will soon issue guidelines.

At the same time, the UGC chairman said that higher education institutions are expected to soon issue the necessary framework and guidelines to implement this rule, which will help students to better achieve their goals.
