Officials said the Home Ministry has introduced 'e-Student Visa' and 'e-Student-X' visas. All applicants have to use the 'Study in India' (SII) portal launched by the government. He said the e-student visa facility can be availed by eligible foreign students registered on the SII portal, while the e-student-X visa is given to the dependents of those holding e-student visas.

The SII portal facilitates the admission process of international students who wish to pursue long-term or short-term courses in India. Students will have to apply for visa separately on https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/ portal but the authenticity of their application will be verified by SII ID. Therefore, it is mandatory for students to apply to Indian higher education institutions through SII website, officials said. Officials said that e-student visa will be given to foreign nationals who get admission to study in India and who wish to study in regular, full-time, graduation, postgraduate (PG), PhD and other such formal programmes in educational institutions duly recognized by the statutory and regulatory body in India. Student visas are issued for up to five years depending on the duration of the course. They can also be extended in India. Apart from this, people holding valid e-student visa can enter India from any desired port of immigration check post, officials said.
