Rooftop Solar Panel: The Tamil Nadu government has allocated a budget of ₹50 crore for the *Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana*. This move is expected to make installing rooftop solar panels in homes even more affordable through subsidies.

PM Surya Ghar Yojana News: Amidst rising electricity prices, hefty monthly electricity bills often place a significant financial burden on households. Installing rooftop solar panels can substantially reduce these electricity costs. Keeping this in mind, the Tamil Nadu government has made a major announcement regarding the *Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana* (Free Electricity Scheme).

The government has allocated a budget of ₹50 crore for this scheme. By July 2026, Tamil Nadu aims to establish a rooftop solar capacity of approximately 316 MW, with over 100,000 families already benefiting from the facility.

How much subsidy will you get for installing solar panels?

Under the *Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana*, the central government provides financial assistance for installing solar systems on rooftops.

A subsidy of up to ₹30,000 from the Centre is available for a 1 kW solar system.
For systems up to 2 kW, this assistance can go up to ₹60,000.
For systems with a capacity of 3 kW or higher, a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 can be provided by the Centre.
By combining assistance from both levels, eligible families can now receive a total subsidy of up to approximately ₹1 lakh.

How much will costs decrease with a ₹1 lakh subsidy?

For instance, suppose installing a 3 kW solar system costs a total of ₹1.80 lakh. If you receive a combined subsidy of ₹1 lakh from the central and state governments, you would only need to pay ₹80,000 out of your own pocket.

What will the EMI be for a loan of ₹50,000? If you need ₹50,000 after the subsidy and wish to cover this amount through a loan, the EMI will depend on the loan's interest rate and tenure.

For instance, assuming an annual interest rate of 9%, the monthly EMI for a ₹50,000 loan over a tenure of approximately 8 years would be around ₹700.

Who can avail the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana?

The applicant must own the house and have an electricity connection in their name.
A government-approved on-grid solar system must be installed on the house's rooftop.
The solar panels used must comply with the prescribed standards.
Central subsidies are not available for fully off-grid or battery-based systems.
