If you live in Delhi and avail of the electricity subsidy, there is important news for you. In view of the steadily rising number of beneficiaries and the growing burden on the state exchequer, the Delhi government has made Aadhaar verification mandatory for consumers availing of the subsidy scheme.

According to official data, the amount allocated for the Delhi government's electricity subsidy reached ₹4,037.63 crore by February 2026. For the current financial year (2026-27), the government has earmarked a budget of ₹3,500 crore for this purpose.

**Steadily Rising Number of Consumers**
The number of electricity consumers in Delhi has risen by approximately 40 percent over the last decade, crossing the 73-lakh mark. Official figures indicate that in the 2024-25 financial year, about 84 percent—or 52.3 lakh—of Delhi's approximately 73 lakh domestic consumers availed of the electricity subsidy. This figure rose to 55 lakh in the 2025-26 financial year, representing nearly 87 percent of total domestic consumers.

**200 Units Free Every Month**
Under the Delhi government's scheme, consumers receive up to 200 units of electricity free of charge every month. Meanwhile, consumers consuming between 201 and 400 units receive a 50 percent subsidy, capped at a maximum of ₹800 per month. According to a recent notification issued by the Electricity Department, the Delhi government deems it appropriate to verify the beneficiary's identity to extend the subsidy benefit.

To this end, beneficiaries must provide proof of possessing a valid Aadhaar number. Under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has notified that individuals must submit their Aadhaar numbers via the government web portal or any other government-prescribed medium to avail of the scheme's benefits.
