Bike-Scooter Entry Tax: If you are planning a trip to Nainital on a bike or scooter, this news is crucial for you. An entry charge is now being levied on two-wheelers arriving from outside the district in Nainital, Uttarakhand's famous tourist town. However, the implementation of this new system has sparked considerable resentment among tourists and locals alike.
Previously, this entry charge applied only to four-wheelers, but bikes and scooters have now been brought under its ambit. People argue that this will significantly increase expenses for ordinary travelers visiting Nainital.
When did this rule come into effect?
The municipality's new toll system was implemented at midnight on July 15, 2026. Since then, a fee of ₹100 has been collected from riders of bikes and scooters arriving from outside Nainital. Under the new system, the fee is being collected at various entry points, including the Lake Bridge toll post. A large number of riders from outside the district were charged the entry fee on the very first day. This system is reportedly set to remain in effect until March 2028.
What are the charges for different vehicles?
Bikes/scooters from other districts and states: ₹100
Two-wheelers registered in Nainital district (UK-04): Exempt
Local private and commercial four-wheelers: ₹200
Out-of-district and large four-wheelers: ₹300
What did the government say following the protests?
Locals and lawyers staged strong protests against the new system, raising slogans and demanding the withdrawal of the fee collection on two-wheelers. They state that this will significantly increase expenses for the general public. Meanwhile, according to Urban Development Minister Ram Singh Kaida, discussions were held with municipal officials after the matter came to light. He has issued instructions to halt the collection of tolls from two-wheelers and to conduct an inquiry into the entire issue.
